Memoirs of a Tree Lord

Written by Isabel Roscoe, Grade 8
Cover illustration by Ali Brew

Nestled in the farthest ranges of the Four Empires lies the forgotten island Närr-ciri. Long ago, the elven lords created trees to inhabit this island and take care of the woodland critters. Burdened by this duty, a particular tree by the name Närran-an grows bitter and wishes to be free of the chains of stillness. Centuries later, a witch-elf comes to the island, offering Närran-an a chance to see what life is like in the eyes of moving, breathing animals. However, as it turns out, an animal’s life isn’t always as beautiful as it seems.

About the Author

Isabel Roscoe is an eighth grade student living in Edmonton, Alberta. She loves reading, especially fantasy, mythology, and folklore. From a young age, she was more interested in the fantastical than the real and created her own words before learning to speak proper English (she still knows medieval runes better than the alphabet!). Isabel has been inspired by books such as The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Chronicles of Narnia. In her free time, she enjoys playing imaginatively with her teddies, listening to Celtic music, drawing, and boring her friends to death with owl facts. Isabel is thankful to her parents and her English Language Arts (ELA) teacher for supporting and encouraging her in her creative writing.
