Can home schooled children participate in the Kids Write 4 Kids Creative Challenge?
Yes, since the net proceeds from the sale of all winning books are now donated to the winning author’s charity of choice.
Is the contest open to International students?
No. We would love to open the contest to young budding authors worldwide, but our legal folks now restrict us to all Canadian provinces.
Do you accept stories written in other languages?
Unfortunately, we do not since our judging panels are English-speaking only; we can only accept stories written in the English language.
What age group can participate in the Contest?
The contest is open to students in grades 4 through 8, ages 8 to 14
If I am 12 years old, can I email in my story submission without parental / adult assistance?
No, we want your parents or guardians to know about your submission. By law, we must have the contact information of an 18+ years old. All submissions must be submitted via our online form so we can collect this information as part of the submission process and documentation provided.
Can parents help their kids edit stories?
Yes. We encourage teachers and parents to help the kids edit their stories.
What formats can I submit the story?
The text must be typed and submitted in a .doc or .docx file format. The word doc should be formatted in 12 pt type in Times font in black. (parents/guardians can assist with inputting the story)
What age group should the stories be written for?
Stories can be written for audiences of all ages. It’s entirely up to the submitting author.
Can I submit my own illustrations to accompany my story submission?
Do not submit any images. If your story has images and is selected, a Ripple Foundation representative will contact you to obtain original images.
Can I submit poetry?
Yes, poetry is accepted, provided the author writes and submits a collection of at least ten poems for consideration. This way, the poems can be compiled into a book of poetry. You can see an example of published poetry here.
Can I submit a graphic novel?
While we appreciate creativity in all forms, the Kids Write 4 Kids contest is specifically for written short stories. Submissions should focus on storytelling through words and should not include illustrations or graphic novel formats. We encourage participants to use their writing skills to create vivid imagery and bring their stories to life through descriptive language.
How long should stories be?
We recommend a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 5,000 words.
Can a story have more than one author or be co-authored?
No, we only consider submissions by single authors.
I participated last year. Can I participate this year? Can I re-submit last year’s story?
We would love to have you participate again. But you must submit a new entry/story for consideration.
Who receives the proceeds from the Kids Write 4 Kids book sales?
Proceeds from book sales on Amazon, Google Play, Apple Books, and Overdrive are donated to the winner’s charity of choice.
How can I buy the books?
You can purchase all the books at Apple iBookstore, Amazon, Google Play and Overdrive.
